Top Native Pollinator Plants in Your State - The Ultimate Guide

Did you know that roughly 75 percent of flowering plants and approximately 35 percent of food crops worldwide depend on animal pollinators to reproduce? Are you looking to add some new plants to your garden to support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators?
Before you head to the store, remember that when choosing pollinator plants, it’s important to choose ones that can thrive in your state’s unique climate. Not only are they more likely to survive the season, but they’re also preferred by pollinators.
Not sure where to begin? Outlined below are some of the top native plants for pollinators in (almost) every state. Note: this isn't an exhaustive list of all native plants in each state, however, we did try to include as many natives that are beneficial for pollinators as we could.

Alabama Native Plants

On the hunt for Alabama native plants? Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a hardy flower (and a perennial, which means it’ll come back every year once you plant it) that does very well with full sun exposure
Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) also survive with full sun exposure and require minimal watering.

Georgia Native Plants
Among the Georgia native pollinators, Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a stunning choice that thrives in full sunlight.
Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifoloius) also tolerates full sun/minimal shade and doesn’t need much maintenance.

Illinois Native Plants
There are plenty of Illinois native pollinators to add to your garden. For example, Anise Hyssop, which does well with full or partial sunlight and a moderate amount of moisture.
Field Thistle (Cirsium discolor) also attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies and doesn’t require much water once it’s been planted. It's also the host plant for the Painted Lady and the American Lady butterfly.

Indiana Native Plants
Among the various Indiana native pollinators, Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpurea) is a great choice. It’s a perennial that’s highly tolerant of dry conditions and does best in full sunlight.
Another good option is Spotted Cranesbill (Geranium maculatum), which performs well in full and partial sunlight and is relatively drought-tolerant.

Iowa Native Plants

Narrowleaf Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium) is one of many hardy Iowa native pollinators. It’s drought-tolerant and can do well in full sun or partial shade.
Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea) are also good choices because, although they do require a moderate amount of water, they can handle full sun and partial sun.

Kansas Native Plants

If you want to plant some Kansas native pollinators, consider Blue False Indigo. Blue False Indigo is a Spring-blooming plant that can handle relatively dry to rmoist soil conditions, as well as full or partial sunlight.
Antelope-Horns Milkweed (Asclepias asperula) is another form of milkweed that pollinators love. It can adapt to various soils and prefers full sun exposure.

Kentucky Native Plants
Among the best Kentucky native pollinators, White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba) is a long-lasting perennial that thrives in full sunlight and is highly drought-tolerant.
Lanceleaf Tickseed (Coreopsis lanceolata) is also a good pick, especially for those who are planting wildflower gardens. It requires dry-to-moderately moist soil and does best in full sunlight.

Louisiana Native Plants

If you’re searching for good Louisiana native pollinators, New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus) is a versatile plant that can handle dry-to-medium soil moisture levels and partial-to-full sun exposure. This plant can thrive in a variety of places, too, not just New Jersey!
Another good choice is Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis), which is better for humid areas that get a lot of sunlight.

Maine Native Plants
To support pollinators in Maine, New England Asters (Aster novae-angliae) is a good option that thrives in full sunlight, especially when it has access to moist, rich soil.
Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is also a favorite among Maine native pollinators that can handle moderate-to-full sun exposure. Like New England Asters, it also needs moist soil.

Maryland Native Plants

Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a deciduous tree that pollinators love. It requires full-to-partial shade and moist, well-drained soil.
Another good choice for Maryland native pollinators is Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). This flower does well in full sun and partial shade. It can handle a variety of soils as long as they’re properly drained, too.

Michigan Native Plants
If you’re searching for Michigan native pollinators, Lead Plant (Amorpha canescens) is a good choice for gardens and flower beds. It thrives in full sunlight and handles dry-to-medium soil moisture levels.
Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) also handles full sunlight well and doesn’t require much soil moisture to survive and thrive long-time.

Minnesota Native Plants
Narrow-Leaf Coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) is a lovely option among Minnesota native pollinators. It responds well to full sunlight and doesn’t require much moisture. It’s also more drought-tolerant than other coneflower varieties, such as white and purple coneflower.
Closed Bottle Gentian (Gentiana andrewsii) is another good, but slightly less hardy, choice. It requires partial shade to thrive, as well as moist (yet well-drained) soil.

Mississippi Native Plants
There are plenty of Mississippi native pollinators that will enhance your garden and support the local pollinator population. One example is Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos), which handles full sun well and average soil moisture levels.
Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium fistulosum) also handles full sunlight well and can tolerate moderate, well-drained soil moisture.

Missouri Native Plants
For those who want to find Missouri native pollinators, Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) is an excellent starting point. It can tolerate full sun and partial shade well and does best with naturally moist soils.
Missouri Ironweed (Vernonia missurica) also handles full sun and responds to moderate-to-wet soils. It can survive partial flooding, too.

New Mexico Native Plants
Chocolate Daisy (Berlandiera lyrata) is one of the best options to consider among New Mexico native pollinators. It thrives in full sunlight and can tolerate moderate-to-dry soils.
Desert Willow is another good choice that is extremely heat and drought-tolerant (perfect for the hot and dry New Mexico climate) and thrives in well-drained soil.

North Dakota Native Plants
Rocky Mountain Beeplant (Cleome serrulata) is one of the best options for North Dakota native pollinators, especially when added to butterfly gardens. It performs best in full sunlight or very light shade and dry-to-medium soil.
Showy Tick Trefoil (Desmodium canadense) also handles full sunlight and partial shade well, as well as dry-to-moist soil.

Ohio Native Plants
Wild Lupine (Lupinus perennis) is a favorite among the many Ohio native pollinators. It requires well-drained soil to thrive, but it is still quite adaptable and can handle full and partial sunlight.
Another good choice is Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis), which loves full sunlight and dry-to-moderately-moist soil.

Oregon Native Plants
When it comes to Oregon native pollinators, Vine Maple (Acer circinatum) is a lovely choice. This tree does best in full or partial sunlight and moist soil. It doesn’t thrive in hot or dry conditions.
White Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is another good option for wildflower pollinator gardens. It loves full sun and does better in dry-moderately moist soil.
