Looking to start or grow your butterfly garden? Butterfly Milkweed, also known as Butterfly Weed, is an essential, beautiful addition and our top seller!
The Butterfly Milkweed with its showy, orange flowers is natively found throughout the US (except for NV, OR, WA, MT, WY, ND) and blooms well into September.
Its long-blooming nature makes it a great host plant for the Monarch Butterfly. You'll also find that it attracts other pollinators like Honeybees, Bumblebees and even Hummingbirds!
Plant forms clumps up to 3’ in diameter if properly taken care of. Leaves are narrow, so they don't provide the most food for caterpillars, so it is recommended to pair with either Common Milkweed or Showy Milkweed. You'll also find that these milkweed don't produce the infamous "milk" when stems or leaves are cut.
Butterfly milkweed can be grown by seed, but it takes about 2-3 years for full development and establishment is difficult, which is why we'd recommend purchasing established plants instead of just putting down seeds.
Common name is pleurisy root. In the past, the plant roots were medicinally used to treat lung inflammations.
Butterfly milkweed grow well in sunny borders, butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens or on dry edges of rain gardens.
